29 randomized, saline-controlled studies were included in this meta-analysis to compare the effects of hyaluronic acid to saline solution in osteoarthritis patients. Pain and function were both improved compared to pretest assessments at 4-13 months and 14-26 months. Pain and function results were also significantly better in patients who received hyaluronic acid injections compared to the patients who were administered a saline solution. Adverse events were comparable between groups.
