OTA 2013: Dynamic hip screw vs.IM screw for the treatment of intertrochanteric fracture

232 patients, over 60 years of age, with an intertrochanteric fracture were randomly assigned into one of two groups to compare the failure rates of treatment with intramedullary screws or dynamic hip screws. Results demonstrated that there was no difference between groups regarding failure rates, but that operation time was significantly less for patients receiving treatment with dynamic hip screws. Patients who received treatment of an unstable fracture with intramedullary screws experienced the highest rate of postoperative blood transfusion.
