NZOA 2013: Metal-on-metal and ceramic-on-metal surface bearings in THA
83 patients with primary hip osteoarthritis participated in this double blinded randomized trial to determine the effects of different surface bearings on total hip replacements. Patients were randomized to receive ceramic-on-metal (CoM) or metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings. The results suggest comparable functional outcomes between groups at 24 months and a trend towards lower levels of cobalt and chromium in CoM patients after 12 months, although no significant differences were found in the serum metal ion levels over the 24 month follow-up.
