ARTHROPLASTY
THA: Superior early outcomes with direct anterior compared to postero-lateral approach
J Arthroplasty. 2013 Oct;28(9):1634-8
Contributing Authors

WP Barrett SE Turner JP Leopold

87 patients undergoing a non-cemented primary total hip arthroplasty for non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease (NIDJD) were randomized to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of the direct anterior approach (DAA) compared to the postero-lateral approach (PA), over 12 months. Patients were primarily assessed for the ability to climb stairs normally and walk unlimited, along with several other secondary outcomes. The evidence presented in this study demonstrated that the direct anterior approach in total hip arthroplasty resulted in superior early outcomes in terms of reduced pain and improved mobility, when compared to the posterior-lateral approach.
