Temperature-Sensitive Release of Prostaglandin E2 in Synovial Tissue

40 patients scheduled to undergo minor knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either post-operative cooling and compression or neither. The results of the study indicated that the cooling system significantly decreased temperature of the arthroscopic knee during after surgery. In addition, it was found that the cooling system decreased inflammation, as measured through PGE2 levels; however, no changes in pain were found with the use of this system.
