21 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis which investigated the use of periarticular multimodal drug injection (PMDI) as a method of postoperative analgesia in total knee and total hip arthroplasty. Outcomes of interest included pain, opioid requirements, range of motion, length of hospital stay, and incidence of adverse events. The pooled results indicated that immediate postoperative pain was reduced with PMDI; however, significance began to be lost in the later postoperative period (24h and 48h). PMDI also had a significant effect on the reduction of opioid requirements and improvements in range of motion.
