Meniscus healing similar between free and restricted rehabilitation after meniscus repair
Am J Sports Med. 2013 Dec;41(12):2753-8. doi: 10.1177/0363546513505079. Epub 2013 Oct 1060 patients with an isolated tear of the meniscus who underwent arthroscopic repair were randomized to determine the effect of a free rehabilitation (accelerated protocol) in comparison to restricted rehabilitation. Outcomes included percentage of nonhealed menisci, the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome score (KOOS), and the Tegner score, which were evaluated up to 2 years postoperatively. The results indicated that there was no significant difference between the rehabilitation protocols for the aforementioned outcomes. In both groups, patients with nonhealed menisci exhibited significantly worse clinical outcomes than healed counterparts.
