TKA: Non-continuous drainage is equally safe, yet more effective than continuous drainage
Int Orthop. 2014 Feb;38(2):361-71. doi: 10.1007/s00264-013-2105-0. Epub 2013 Sep 19.9 randomized controlled trials (761 patients; 811 knees) comparing continuous with non-continuous drainage in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were included in this review. The purpose of this review was to compare the efficacy and safety of these two techniques. Results indicated that non-continuous drainage significantly reduced haemoglobin loss and postoperative visible blood loss when compared to continuous drainage. The two groups, however, displayed similar knee range of motion, requirement for blood transfusion, and incidence of complications.
