AAOS: Pre-admission chlorhexidine protocol appears to reduce infections following TJA

366 patients scheduled to undergo either total hip or knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive, in addition to standard in-hospital preparation procedures, cloths soaked with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (to be used prior to hospital admission), or no pre-admission intervention at all.The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference between groups regarding surgical site infection. Results indicated that cloths saturated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate significantly reduced incidence of surgical site infections compared to standard care.
