Barbed sutures improve closure times and costs compared to traditional sutures in TKA/THA
J Arthroplasty. 2014 Feb;29(2):283-7. doi: 10.1016/j.arth.2013.05.031. Epub 2013 Nov 22.34 patients scheduled for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomly allocated to receive barbed or traditional sutures, with the purpose of comparing time to wound closure, cost, and rate of wound complications between suture types. Barbed sutures decreased time to wound closure and improved cost-savings, but appeared to increase the frequency and severity of wound related complications compared to traditional sutures.
