13 studies (4 RCTs, 9 prospective level IV studies) comprised of 3,998 patients were analyzed in this systematic review/meta-analysis to investigate any prophylaxis appearing in literature used to prevent deep venous thrombosis (DVT) after arthroscopic knee surgery. Upon analysis, patients who received low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) prophylaxis had a pooled risk ratio of 0.18 for the development of DVT compared those who did not receive prophylaxis. Additionally, the rate of proximal DVT was markedly reduced in LMWH patients [11.1% (4/36 cases)] compared to patients who did not receive prophylaxis [21.3% (29/136 cases)].
