21 women with anorexia nervosa (according to DSM IV weight and psychiatric criteria), and a T-score of -2.5 or less, were randomized to self-administer a subcutaneous injection into the abdomen of either 20 ug teriparatide or placebo. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teriparatide (TPT) on bone mineral density and markers of bone turnover. Results indicated that TPT significantly increased bone mineral density at the posteroanterior spine and lateral spine, when compared to placebo. Although TPT had a similar effect on CTX, IGF-1 and sclerostin when compared to placebo, levels of P1NP, a marker of bone formation, improved to a significantly greater degree in the TPT group.
