J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2011 Jul 20;93(14):1301-9. doi: 10.2106/JBJS.J.00594

18 Level-I RCTs with 7075 total knee arthroplasties (3463 in the resurfacing group and 3612 in the non-resurfacing group) were selected for the meta-analysis to compare outcomes after patellar resurfacing or non-resurfacing, in terms of reoperation rates, incidence of anterior knee pain, and functional scores. Secondary analyses were conducted to compare the same outcomes with regards to patella-friendly and non-patella-friendly implant designs. The results indicated that resurfacing had no effect on anterior knee pain, but reduced re-operation rates. The implant design also had no effect on re-operation rates.
