EFORT: Movement restriction following hemiarthroplasty offers no clinical benefit

285 patients who underwent hemiarthroplasty using a direct lateral approach were randomized to either a restriction-free (i.e. no movement restriction, no braces, use of aids as needed) or restricted group (i.e. movement restriction and mandatory use of aids) as their postoperative rehabilitation regimen. The purpose of this study was to determine whether restriction following this type of surgery is necessary with respect to subjective functional outcomes, complications and mortality. Results indicated that, despite higher work effort for the rehabilitation personnel in the restricted group, there were no between-group differences in subjective functional outcomes, the number of dislocations, complications, or mortality.
