95 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty, due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, were randomized to have their operated knees placed in 70 degree of flexion over an inactive CPM machine or in full extension for 24 hr period after surgery. There were no significant differences between the two groups in blood loss or range of movement, thus failing to demonstrate any benefit of splintage in flexion over extension after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
