Low-magnitude high-frequency vibration limits fracture risk in elders

710 elderly females were randomized to either receive low magnitude high-frequency vibration (LMHFV) or a control to investigate the efficacy of LMHFV in fracture prevention. Patients were monitored over 18 months based on fall and fracture rates, muscle performance, and bone quality. The evidence presented in this study demonstrated that LMHFV resulted in a significantly lower rate of fall and fracture incidence as compared to the control group (18.6% versus 28.7%). These patients also exhibited significantly better functional outcomes. No differences were noted in either group for bone mineral density.
