J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2014 Jun;23(6):759-66

102 patients with an anterior shoulder dislocation were included in this study. Following reduction of the dislocation, patients were randomized to immobilization in either abduction and external rotation (AbER) or adduction and internal rotation (AdIR). The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was a difference in recurrence rate between the two groups. After 24 month follow-up, recurrent dislocation was observed to be significantly more frequent in the group treated with AdIR as opposed to AbER.
