16 RCTs were included (MID: 1085 patients, SD: 1054 patients) in this meta-analysis comparing minimally invasive discectomy (MID) to standard discectomy (SD) in the management of lumbar disc herniation, with respect to risk of recurrence, safety, and efficacy. Pooled results indicated comparable complication totals and postoperative leg pain scores. MID was favoured in outcomes of Incision size, blood loss, and hospital stay, but was associated with a higher risk for disc herniation recurrence and longer surgical times, when compared to SD.
