27 patients (aged 18-80) who had been diagnosed with a clinical scaphoid fracture by an emergency department physician, were randomly assigned into 1 of 2 groups to determine if early bone scans resulted in shorter cast immobilization periods in patients than those analyzed with radiographs. All patients were placed in molded, below-elbow thumb spica casts after initial diagnosis. Results from the study demonstrated that there was no significant difference between groups in the amount of days patients were immobilized.
