100 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomly assigned to a position of either full extension or 90 degrees flexion for the first 6 hours postoperatively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of postoperative knee flexion after TKA on blood loss and the need for transfusion. Knee flexion at 90 degrees was found to significantly reduce postoperative blood loss, drop in Hb and hematocrit levels as well as the need for blood transfusion compared to the extension group.
