Thirty four patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty were randomized to a methadone or morphine patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) system for the first 24 hours post-surgery with the purpose of comparing the analgesia effect between the two groups. Methadone PCA resulted in less opioid consumption and lower pain scores in the first 24 hours postoperative, while the proportion of patients who reported adverse effects was similar between groups.
