Improved function when undergoing early mobilization regimen after ankle fracture surgery
Foot Ankle Int. 2007 Jan;28(1):13-9.66 patients with ankle fractures requiring surgery were randomly assigned to two postoperative regimens: early mobilization in a removable cast and immobilization in a non-weight bearing below-knee cast. Results showed that there were short-term benefits for early mobilized patients such improved subjective and objective functional outcomes compared to the immobilized patients. However, there was also uncertainty about the source and risk of wound infections that occurred in three patients in the early mobilization group.
