60 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint were randomly allocated to receive 3 monthly injections of dextrose or a single corticosteroid injection after 2 monthly placebo injections. The purpose of this study was to determine which treatment improves symptoms and restores function more effectively up to 6 months post-intervention. Dextrose achieved greater pain relief and function restoration than corticosteroid injections at final follow-up.
