49 patients scheduled to undergo elective unilateral total knee arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis were randomized to receive a femoral nerve block in combination with either periarticular infiltration analgesia (PIA) or sciatic nerve block (SNB). The purpose of this study was to compare the analgesic effect of both treatments within 36 hours post-surgery. The combination FNB and PIA provided adequate analgesia within 36 hours post-surgery. Although SNB decreased intraoperative opioid consumption, PIA effectively reduced pain from 12-24 hours after surgery and required less time to perform. All other outcomes were similar between treatment groups.
