541 patients diagnosed with single-level cervical disc disease with radiculopathy were randomized to either undergo anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) with the Prestige Cervical Disc. The purpose was to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of cervical disc replacement with the Prestige prosthesis up to 7 years postoperatively. Results revealed that CDA allowed a statistically significant greater percentage of patients to achieve "overall success" at 84 months, which was defined as a minimum 15-pt increase on the Neck Disability Index, maintained or improved neurological status, no implant- or surgical procedure-related serious adverse event, and no failure requiring further additional surgical procedures. A secondary analysis was also performed which included maintained disc height as a parameter of clinical success, which maintained significant difference between groups at 84 months.
