Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2014 Nov;22(11):2756-62.

60 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty for primary knee osteoarthritis were randomized to either mechanical knee flexion, pharmacological treatment using tranexamic acid, or a control group. The purpose of this study was to compare blood loss and rate of blood transfusion between treatment groups. The pharmacological group decreased blood loss and transfusion needs compared to both the knee flexion and control groups. Haemoglobin levels were higher in the pharmacological group on the day of surgery and one day postoperative compared to the control group.
