Adding epidural steroid injection to usual care for lumbosacral radicular syndrome
Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2015 Mar;96(3):381-7.

73 patients with acute lumbosacral radicular syndrome were randomized to epidural steroid (80mg triamcinolone) injection plus usual care, or usual care alone. The purpose was to determine whether segmental epidural steroid injections (SESIs) and usual care for lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LRS) are able to improve health-related quality of life and reduce costs when compared to patients who are solely treated with usual care. Outcomes of interest included a numeric rating scale for pain, the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for disability, the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire for quality of life, and cost questionnaires. The results indicated that segmental epidural steroid injections offered significant benefits in SF-36 Physical Component Scores, and were associated with reductions in societal costs when added to usual care.
