Hyaluronic acid improves pain in patients with hip osteoarthritis at 3-month evaluation
J Arthroplasty. 2015 Mar;30(3):507-511.

23 studies, including 6 randomized controlled trials, were assessed in this meta-analysis and systematic review. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid in patients afflicted with hip osteoarthritis. The study aimed to assess the impact of hyaluronic acid on pain, duration of pain relief, and optimal formulation when compared to placebo and control groups. The results of this study, assessing only the high-quality trials identified, indicated that patients treated with hyaluronic acid experienced statistically significant, yet marginal clinical improvement in pain relief when compared to control groups. Other variables could not be sufficiently evaluated due to the lack of consistent data reporting. Further multicentre randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate this treatment.
