Topical NSAIDs equally effective as oral NSAIDs for knee pain, with fewer adverse effects

282 people, aged 50 years or older, with knee pain on most days for at least a month were randomized to the use of a topical or an oral NSAID for a 24 month period. It was observed that both modes of administration were equally efficacious in pain control according to WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities) osteoarthritis index. Furthermore, the topical route reported fewer respiratory side effects and lesser impact on the renal function compared to NSAIDs administered orally.
