20 randomized trials were included in this meta-analysis and systematic review evaluating dry needling in the treatment of shoulder and neck pain associated with myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). Dry needling was compared to a control/placebo, wet needling, and other treatments over the short, medium, and long terms. Results found that dry needling was an effective treatment for pain over the short- and medium term when compared to control/placebo, but that wet needling and other treatments, such as physiotherapy, were superior in the medium term.
