US-guided hematoma block an effective alternative for analgesia in distal radial reduction
Emerg Med J. 2015 Jun;32(6):474-7

143 patients were randomized to receive either procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA), or an ultrasound-guided hematoma block (US-HB) to manage pain in the reduction of an acute distal radial fracture. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of US-HB in comparison to PSA. The results found that PSA and US-HB provided similar pain management at 5 and 15 minutes post reduction, with the only difference between groups coming at 10 minutes after reduction, favouring the PSA group. The US-HB group had a shorter time to discharge while the PSA group had a greater number of early adverse effects.
