153 patients with radiculopathy in the cervical spine were randomized to receive treatment with either an artificial disc replacement device (ADR), or the traditional anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) in order to determine the more effective procedure. Findings showed that at 2 postoperative years, neck disability index and quality of life measures were comparable between the two groups, as were blood loss, return to work status, analgesic consumption, rate of secondary surgery and incidence of adjacent segment disease requiring surgery.
