54 patients, over 75 years of age with intertrochanteric femur fracture, were included in this randomized controlled trial. The purpose of the study was to analyze functional outcomes between patients treated with closed reduction and internal fixation with proximal femoral nailing and patients treated with cemented hemiarthroplasty, over a period of 18 months. Harris Hip score results favoured the hemiarthroplasty group in the short term, but beyond 6 months the proximal femoral nailing group was superior. Complications were similar among groups.
