Partially-threaded vs fully-threaded cannulated screws in femoral neck fracture fixation
Injury. 2015 Jul;46 Suppl 2:S24-8.

44 patients were randomized to receive partially-threaded cannulated screws or fully-threaded compression screws to treat femoral neck fractures. The goal of this study was to compare screw types on the following outcomes: operative time, fluoroscopy time, functional outcome over 12 month follow-up, and radiographic assessment of union, malunion, and nonunion. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in operative time, fluoroscopy time, or functional outcome over follow-up. The partially-threaded cannulated screw demonstrated a shorter time to union and lower incidence of malunion and nonunion compared to the fully-threaded group, but in the absence of an a priori sample size calculation, it was unknown whether the study was adequately powered to eliminate possible type I error.
