Intraarticular sodium hyaluronate injections safe and effective in knee osteoarthritis

90 adults (116 knees) diagnosed with early osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either weekly intra-articular injections of a placebo or sodium hyaluronate solution, for 5 weeks. The purpose of the study was to determine the efficacy and safety of this treatment in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The results indicated that hyaluronic acid injections displayed benefits over the placebo, peaking at 5 weeks in terms of pain and the improvement of daily activities. Benefits lasted up to 3 months.
