9 randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to sham laser therapy for treatment of knee osteoarthritis were included in this meta-analysis. The purpose of the analysis was to compare pain and functional outcomes between treatments, to determine if LLLT provides significant symptomatic relief. Results indicated that LLLT does not provide any significantly better outcomes over sham therapy, as both groups demonstrated similar changes in VAS pain scores, WOMAC pain, function and stiffness scores, and range of motion, at both immediately after treatment and at 12 weeks follow-up.
