225 patients undergoing elective joint replacement surgery were randomized to one of three groups: one receiving "M" structured touch therapy, one receiving guided imagery therapy, or a control group receiving only standard care. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of M therapy, which involves constant light pressure accompanied by gentle stroking motions on the hands and feet, at reducing pain and anxiety immediately after treatment. Results found both M therapy and guided imagery to provide significantly greater pain and anxiety relief compared to the control, with the greatest benefits seen in the M therapy group. Patient satisfaction was greatest in the M group, and higher in the guided imagery group compared to the control group.
