141 patients who suffered a displaced fracture of the femoral neck were randomized to receive either cemented or cementless stems for fixation during total or hemiarthroplasty of the hip. The purpose was to compare clinical assessments and radiological outcomes to determine if either fixation method provided advantageous outcomes one year postoperatively. The results indicated that the Harris Hip Score, Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment Questionnaire and quality of life (EQ-5D) questionnaires were significantly better in the cemented group. Acetabular erosion occurred more often for the hemiarthroplasties in the cementless group while heterotopic ossification occurred more often in the cemented group. Additionally, 8 intraoperative fractures occurred in the cementless group while none occurred in the cemented group.
