Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2015 Nov;23(11):3383-92

15 elite athletes (16 ankles) with grade 3 high ankle sprains, with complete anteroinferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) tears, were included in this study. The purpose of the study was to determine how ultrasound-guided platelet-rich in Growth Factor (PRGF) injections effect recovery, return to play, and dynamic stability in this injury. The results displayed that athletes who received PRGF injections had a significantly shorter return to play times and a lower number of patients returning to play with residual pain compared to the control group. Sonographic evaluations displayed no significant differences in the syndesmotic opening between groups up to 6 weeks post-injury. Further trials using larger sample size and a more generalizable patient population are warranted based on the results of this study.
