ARTHROPLASTY
Explosive resistance training effectively improves physical/muscle function prior to THA
Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2016 Jan;24(1):91-8.

80 osteoarthritic patients scheduled to undergo total hip arthroplasty were randomized to preoperative care consisting of either a 10-week explosive-type resistive training program or usual care. The objective of this trial was to determine if this type of preoperative exercise program was feasible and effective. The findings of this trial suggested that the exercise program was both feasible and efficacious. The adherence to the protocol was relatively high and pain complaints were minimal. Functional outcomes favoured patients undergoing the training program compared to standard preoperative care when assessed immediately prior to surgery. Additional assessments are needed to assess if the observed preoperative advantage translated into improve postoperative outcomes for patients who underwent the preoperative explosive-type resistive training program.
