AAOS 2016: Immobilization in external versus internal rotation after shoulder dislocation

50 patients with traumatic primary anterior shoulder dislocation were randomized to immobilization in external or internal rotation following reduction. The purpose of this study was to compare recurrence rate between groups over a 2-year follow-up period. The were no significant differences in recurrence rate between groups when analyzing the entire sample; however, a subgroup analysis of patients aged 20-40 noted a significantly lower recurrence rate with external rotation versus internal rotation.
