48 patients with chronic, symptomatic calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff undergoing arthroscopic needling were randomized to receive either a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) infiltration after debridement of the calcification or no PRP infiltration (control group). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of PRP on the healing in rotator cuff defects. The results displayed similar improvements between groups in terms of Constant scores, QuickDash Scores, and Simple Shoulder Test scores at all follow-ups up to 1 year postoperatively. No differences were noted in the number of patients with defects or in tendon thickness assessments at both 3 and 6 months, or in MRI evaluations at 1 year postoperatively.
