88 patients undergoing a revision surgery for total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomised to undergo the procedure with or without the use of a closed suction drain. The present trial was conducted in order to determine the effect of closed suction drains in revision THA surgery. The findings of this study indicated that a greater number of patients in the closed suction group received a transfusion. Additionally, the use of a closed suction drain resulted in a significantly longer length of hospital stay. Wound drainage, ecchymosis, narcotic consumption, pain, satisfaction, infection occurrence, and Harris Hip scores were comparable between groups.
