Comparison of Plate versus Intramedullary Nail Fixation for Distal Tibia Shaft Fractures

104 patients with extra-articular distal tibia fractures were randomized to receive either reamed intramedullary nail or a large fragment medial plate. Results from 12 month follow-up indicated that each group had 6 patients that developed deep infection. In addition, there was a trend towards greater rates of non-union in the nail group. Lastly, the rate of primary angular malalignment of 5 degrees or more was significantly greater in the nail group.
