ARTHROPLASTY
Comparison of LIA versus continuous FNB for postoperative analgesia after TKA
J Arthroplasty. 2016 Apr;31(4):913-7

45 patients scheduled for unilateral total knee arthroplasty were randomized to postoperative analgesia with either local infiltration analgesia or continuous femoral nerve block for 48 hours postoperatively. Additionally, all patients received patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) morphine and oral loxoprofen. Patients were assessed postoperatively for pain scores at rest, total morphine consumption over the first 24 hours, thigh circumference, and performance-based benchmarks of functional recovery. Results demonstrated significantly lower pain score and morphine consumption over the first postoperative day in the LIA group compared to the FNB group. Pain scores from 2 days to 21 days postoperatively did not significantly differ between groups. No significant differences were observed in results on thigh circumference or functional recovery.
