No added benefit of fusion to decompression for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis

247 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, with or without spondylolisthesis, were randomized to decompression plus fusion or decompression alone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes according to the Oswestry Disability Index, the National Swedish Register for Spine Surgery questionnaire, the Zurich Claudication Questionnaire, and the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) score, patient satisfaction, global assessment of back and leg pain, and the 6-minute walk test. Results at 2 years demonstrated no significant differences between groups.
