COA 2016: Motor sparing knee block versus periarticular infiltration for pain after TKA

82 patients scheduled to undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive either a preoperative motor sparing knee block (MSB) injection that targets the adductor canal and lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, or intraoperative periarticular infiltration (PAI) to compare their effects on duration of analgesia, postoperative quadriceps power, and length of hospital stay. Findings indicated that the MSB group reported a significantly longer duration of analgesia compared to the PAI group. Postoperative quadriceps power and length of stay were comparable between groups.
