Fast-track THA safely reduces length of hospital stay compared to standard care
J Arthroplasty. 2016 Aug;31(8):1686-1692.e1. doi: 10.1016/j.arth.2016.02.011. Epub 2016 Feb 17.258 Chinese patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty for hip fracture or dysfunction (osteoarthritis) were included in this study to determine the safety and efficacy of a fast-track program designed to limit postoperative hospital stay to 2 days. Patients were randomized to the fast-track program or standard care. The average length of stay was significantly shorter in the fast-track group (2.1 days) compared to the standard care group (5.8 days). The fast-track group also experienced a lower 30-day complication rate and a reduced estimated total blood loss. Ninety-day complication rate and readmission rate did not significantly differ between groups.
