230 patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty were included in this study to determine if the use of closed suction drains following the procedure led to a significant increase in blood loss, haemoglobin drop, and transfusion rate when compared to no drainage. The results of this study indicated that were no significant differences in calculated total blood loss, postoperative hemoglobin, the rate of transfusion, or the units of blood transfused.
