Methylprednisolone injection ahead of exercise program not beneficial in knee OA treatment

100 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to a 12-week exercise program with or without the addition of an intraarticular corticosteroid injection prior to the commencement of the exerise program. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of IA methylprednisolone acetate two weeks prior to an exercise program resulted in significantly greater improvement in patient-reported pain and functional measures at the end of the program when compared to those administered a placebo saline injection. No significant between-group differences were observed in any outcome measure.
